Explore the culture, style, and persona of visionary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), an artist who continues to inspire with her story of love, adventure, and pain. Celebrated globally today as an iconic, renegade artist and outspoken feminist, Kahlo’s life began perilously. Stricken with polio as a child, and injured as a teenager in a bus accident that left her permanently disabled, Kahlo was subjected to enormous pain and turmoil early in her life. While recovering from her accident, Kahlo returned to her childhood hobby — painting. Soothed by the solace of art-making, it was during this period that she decided to become an artist. While Kahlo’s life was short-lived — she died at 47— her story continues to inspire artists of the 21st century.

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to present an exciting opportunity for artists of the River Region! The MMFA invites artists working in pairs to propose works that respond to regional COVID-19 experiences. Seeking to engage the community with uplifting and healing creativity, themes can reflect feelings or loss confronted during the pandemic, potentially positive outcomes, or any wisdom gained going forward. In order to exemplify community togetherness, artists are asked to work together and submit proposals for art installations in pairs. In total, four artists will be chosen (one pair collaborating on a sculptural installation and one pair collaborating on a mural installation). Each pair will be awarded a total of $2,000 to create either a sculpture or a mural. The Community Togetherness Project is supported by funding from Wells Fargo and will also feature the work of local students.

Baton Rouge Gallery's annual benefit event - KINETICS, presented by Hancock Whitney - returns this year with a new virtual spin on its fun and fast-paced live art auction. Each year the event celebrates the energy of contemporary art, specifically in Louisiana's capital city, providing a chance for arts lovers to celebrate their passion while bidding on more than 30 original works from some of the region's most talented and prolific artists.
The virtual event will include stories from the artists the gallery serves, the volunteers who make it possible, as well as live music, and more. Of course, the star of the show, as always, will be the work of your favorite BRG Artist Members. The bidding for each piece, regardless of the work’s size, media, or the artist behind the work, will open at just $100 via online bidding. Then, on November 20, our professional auctioneer will pick up the bidding and crown a winner for each piece up for grabs.
A portion of the evening's proceeds will go directly to the local and regional artists that make up the gallery's artist member roster with the remaining funds supporting BRG's twelve exhibitions annually, numerous popular cultural and educational programs, and more!
This special night supports local and contemporary art in Louisiana's capital city year-round. Your support and the success of this great night allows the gallery to focus on its mission and programming throughout the rest of the year. We thank everyone whose contributions during this great event help make the arts in our community - and thus, the community itself - stronger!
